It is critical that you get your new kitty to the vet within 72 hours!  This is to set it up on a shots schedule, monitor it for any unforeseen issues and address any residual parasites.

This is directed towards people who have adopted their pet from Last Chance Animal Rescue, Inc.  Other rescue groups and shelter may have other protocols in place but you may feel free to use this for some basic information.

First of all, the hospital you choose should be clean and odor free.  It should have vets, staff and technicians that are both polite and helpful.  They should be happy to answer your questions.  If they can not answer your question they should be able to refer you to someone who can.

You should write down any questions that you have for the vet before you go so that you do not forget anything.  Also while the vet is talking you could take notes.  It is a lot to remember.  Remember, you are talking to an expert and it is not reasonable that you can  remember all that he/she tells you.

If you have adopted your pet from Last Chance Animal Rescue, Inc.  quite a bit of the medical has been done for your pet.  The animals have been spayed and neutered, tested negative for feline leukemia and feline AIDS, dewormed and had lots of vaccinations.  They have been treated for fleas and ticks with FRONTLINE and their ears have been treated with a one time treatment for ear mites.  They are all from very high kill shelters and there is a possibility they have been exposed to some very contagious diseases.   Because of this you should have your new pet quarantined from any other animals for a period of two weeks.   THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT!

The office visit should include a full physical exam, ears, eyes, nose fur, paws, basically nose to toe.  In the metro DC area the cost can range from 40-85 dollars.  The kitty also needs a fecal on it's first visit.  It helps A LOT to bring a sample!!  This is where the vet takes a sample of the feces and look at it under the microscope.  The vets are able to diagnose many types of parasites this way.  Some of the things that they look foe ar e not worms but are parasites.  Some are contagious to humans but generally unless you lick your fingers after you clean the litter box you are safe.  The term for diseases contagious to humans is zoonotic.   The fecal test may cost between 15-35 dollars.

Depending on the results the kitty may need additional deworming.  This is not unusual as deworming is a process not a one time event.  There are many types of dewormers or a specific type of antibiotic given and usually they are not very expensive.  The range is from 10-25 dollars.

If the kitty is sneezing or coughing he/she may need some antibiotics.  You have to trust the vet on their judgment.  After all, you are paying up to $85.00 for their opinion!

Rarely will your kitty need radiographs or bloodwork.  This is where it may start to get expensive.  If this is the case please call us and we can get you in to see our vet.  If your kitty is not eating or drinking you must get immediate vet care,  You can call the emergency number on our office recording if it is an emergency.  The office number is listed on your contract.  Please do not call the emergency number with routine questions.

Remember, if you run into any issues you can contact Last Chance and we often can help you with advise or we also have our own vet clinic that you can visit.

Thank you for adopting!!
